Dodge's first 4-door SUV was the Durango. In its early years, this mid-size SUV's competitors included the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Ford Explorer and Chevrolet/GMC Suburban.

Horsepower was raised from 175 to 230 for 1999. Also, a two-door version of the Durango was sold as the Ramcharger exclusively in Mexico through 2002, retaining the same name as its North American counterpart.
