Year-to-year changes[]
1992[]
Aimed at an upscale market that appreciates a large, conservative-appearing sedan with modern styling, a high level of standard equipment and a reasonable price, the Eighty-Eight model lineup included the Royale, LS and LSS. Each of the three models was equipped differently and a very limited number of other options were available. The first Eighty Eight Royales were sold as of August 1991.
1993[]
More torque and standard ABS was added for 1993. Comparable vehicles included the Mercury Gran Marquis, Chrysler Concorde and Buick LeSabre. Import models at this level of standard equipment made it difficult to compete with Eighty-Eight's value.
1995[]
Oldsmobile continued to improve the mechanical components under a recognizable, familiar skin. New for 1995 was a completely redesigned 3.8-liter V6 engine that made 35 more horsepower than the older models' 170. The new low-deck block had cross-bolted main caps for extra block rigidity, while reducing weight. Valvetrain components were lightened, while the valves themselves were larger, for improved engine breathing and efficiency. Dual knock sensors allowed a higher compression ratio (9.4:1) for higher fuel efficiency. The redline of the engine was raised to 6000 rpm, making it breathe well right to up the limit. In addition, there was a supercharged version of this same V6 that was optional on the LSS model. The blower was optional for another 20 horsepower. A "touring" suspension with 16-in. wheels provided improved ride and handling on the LSS. The last addition to the Eighty Eight was a headlight "flash-to-pass" function to the turn-signal stalk.
