Geo Metro

1991

Metro, GM's smallest and most affordable car, was available as a 3-door hatchback (Base, LSi and XFi), a 5-door hatchback (Base and LSi), and a 2-door convertible (LSi only), all of which were carryovers for 1992 and 1993.

1994

All of the LSi models were discontinued, and no more convertibles were ever produced again from Geo.

1995

When redesigned for its 1995 model year, the Metro got its first 4-cylinder engine. Appealing to small families who keep a tight rein on their budgets, or as an added car in multivehicle households, Geo put on the gloves against small-car contenders such as Ford Aspire, Mazda Protege and Hyundai Accent.

Aside from putting on inches in wheelbase (3-door), length and height, the Metro line saw some model shuffling as well as sporting new, more aerodynamic styling. Gone was the 5-door hatchback, replaced by a 4-door sedan, the first 4-passenger Metro with a trunk. The fuel economy champ XFi model has also been dropped, causing Metro to relinquish the title to the Honda Civic. The old 3-door hatchback LSi returned as the upscale trim. Also added to the lineup was a brand-new LSi sedan.

The big news under the hood was a 1.3-liter, 70-horsepower aluminum Four that came standard in 4-door models, and was optional on the LSi hatchback. The old, reliable 1.0-liter 3-banger continued to churn out its 55 horsepower in hatchback models. A 5-speed manual transaxle was standard, with a 3-speed automatic available on all but the base 3-door. Metro's tiny 12-in. wheels have also grown up and were now 13 in. across the board.

All Metros came standard with 4-wheel independent suspension, front and rear swaybars, dual airbags, stainless-steel exhaust, highback reclining front bucket seats and daytime running lights, a safety feature that turns on the headlights with the engine, the better to be seen, day or night. Antilock brakes were an option.

1997

The base sedan was dropped, leaving just behind the LSi sedan along with the 3-door hatchbacks.

Geo Prizm

1991

Geo's largest vehicle, the Prizm, originally included a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan, as both base and GSi models.

1992

The 5-door hatchback was dropped in 1992, leaving only the 4-door sedan.

1993

The Geo Prizm sedan was redesigned, and offered in two trim levels, standard and the more deluxe LSi. Prizm was a GM/Toyota joint project. It competed with Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra and Hyundai Elantra.

The standard sedan used a 105-horsepower, 1.6-liter engine, while LSi models had 10 more hp available with an optional 1.8-liter Four. Standard transmission with either engine was a 5-speed manual. A 3-speed automatic transaxle was an option with the smaller engine, while an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic was the option with the bigger powerplant.

All Prizms came with dual outside mirrors, and stainless steel exhaust systems standard. Dual-mode safety belts on the front passenger seat and outboard rear seating positions made the installation of child safety seats less of a chore. The LSi added air conditioning, full wheel covers, split folding 60/40 rear seat, an optional rear stabilizer bar (which comes with the larger engine), and upscale interior trim.

Other options included an electric sunroof, rear window defogger, dual power outside mirrors and antilock brakes. Three audio packages, all optional, began with an AM/FM stereo, and ended with a tape/CD player and six speakers.

1994

Dual airbags were added for this year.

1995

Although there were virtually no changes in 1995, the Prizm did have some new interior fabrics, exterior colors and new wheel covers.

1997

The Prizm drops to 100 horsepower.

Geo Storm

1991

The original Geo Storm consisted of a 2-door coupe (2+2 and GSi) and a 2-door hatchback. All of these models were carried over to 1992.

1993

For the Storm's last year, no 2-door hatchbacks were ever produced.

Geo Tracker

1991

The Geo Tracker was positioned at the entry-level end of the sport/utility market and was designed for young first-time buyers who prized driving fun, sporty appearance and fuel economy. Key competitors included the Jeep Wrangler, Isuzu Amigo and the Tracker's second cousin, the nearly identical Suzuki Sidekick.

The Geo Tracker came in one shape only, a 2-door, but in three flavors: a 2-wheel-drive convertible, a 4-wheel-drive convertible and a 4-wheel-drive hardtop. The two trim levels were base (2wd and 4wd) and LSi (available with 4wd only).

The one and only engine for 2wd models remained the 80-horsepower 1.6-liter sohc inline 4-cylinder. The standard transmission was a 5-speed manual. A 3-speed automatic with a new brake-transmission safety interlock was optional.

Four-wheel-drive models featured a 2-speed manual-shift transfer case and automatic locking hubs for shift-on-the-fly operation.

1995

The Tracker saw a number of small but significant improvements for 1995. On the outside, convertible models had a new easy-opening top (the front half was used to fold back like a sunroof, or the entire top was used to stow for open-air driving). Hardtop models now came with standard rear washer/wipers. In addition, two new exterior colors were available.

Inside, new dual cup holders have been added to the standard console. Under the hood, the 95-horsepower 16-valve version of the 1.6-liter sohc 4-cylinder engine was now standard on all 4-wheel-drive models.

1996

All of the 80-horsepower engines were replaced by not only all 95 hp engines, but also a brand-new 4-door SUV, available as a 2-wheel-drive or 4-wheel-drive, and also as base and LSi models.

After 1997, all of Geo's cars were renamed as Chevrolet vehicles.
