The Scoupe was Hyundai's first attempt at building a car for something other than just transportation. The Scoupe fit neatly into the market vacated by the original Honda CRX, and sold against the Toyota Paseo, Mazda MX-3, and the Pontiac Sunbird and Sunfire.

The Scoupe was also the first Hyundai with that company's own Alpha 3-valve-per cylinder engine design, rather than the Mitsubishi-designed engines used in other Hyundais.

Year-to-year changes[]

1991[]

At the beginning of the '90s, there were two levels of the Scoupe: base and LS. They shared the same basic body, chassis and engine. The 1991 Scoupe later became a carryover for 1992.

1993[]

A third level of the Scoupe, the LS Turbo, was introduced in 1993. The base and LS models were now given 92 horsepower, while the Turbo had 115. All were carryover models for 1994.

Air conditioning was optional across all three model lines. They also had standard rear-window defoggers, front map pockets, full instrumentation (the Turbo has an additional boost gauge), trunk and fuel-door releases, passenger-side walk-in seat positioning, rear 60/40 split seatback, electronic multipoint fuel injection, body-color bumpers, tinted glass, variable-speed intermittent wipers, and antiroll bars front and rear.

The LS and Turbo added AM/FM/ cassette stereo with four speakers (others upgrades are optional, including CD player), better-quality carpeting (compared with the base Scoupe), dual cup holders, driver's 6-way/passenger's 4-way adjustable seats, power windows, power steering (optional on the base car), body-color door handles and side cladding. The Turbo had special cloth seats, leather-wrapped gearshift knob and steering wheel, alloy wheels (optional on the LS), foglamps and sport-tuned suspension package. Both LS and Turbo had an optional pop-up moonroof.

1995[]

With no further changes for the 1995 model year, the Hyundai Scoupe continued sales through 1996 before being replaced by the Hyundai Tiburon.
