Year-to-year changes[edit | edit source]
1991[edit | edit source]
The original pickup truck from Isuzu came in four models -- LS Extended Cab, S Extended Cab, S Long Bed and S Short Bed.
1992[edit | edit source]
This was the last model year for the LS. After that, only the S remained starting with the 1993 Isuzu pickup trucks.
1993[edit | edit source]
Positioned in the middle of the compact pickup truck market, the Isuzu pickup was designed to appeal to buyers looking for an import pickup that offered practical payload-carrying abilities, rugged durability and passenger ride comfort. With a maximum payload of 1470 pounds the Isuzu was, for all practical purposes, a 3/4-ton pickup. The Isuzu's primary competition was from the similarly straightforward Mitsubishi Mighty Max.
Isuzu's new, leaner lineup featured a standard bed model powered by the 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The long-bed model was also powered by the 2.3-liter engine linked to the 5-speed manual. The 4-wheel-drive model was equipped with the larger 2.6-liter sohc inline 4-cylinder engine and standard bed configuration. Major options included air conditioning, black step bumper, and brush/grille guard (4wd models only.)
1994[edit | edit source]
The 2.6-liter 4WD trucks were given standard power steering.
1995[edit | edit source]
The Isuzu pickup featured a number of significant changes for 1995 designed to simplify the line. Under the hood, the optional 3.1-liter V6 engine was dropped. The 2.6-liter sohc 4-cylinder now assumed the role as the top engine option. The base-level 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder was upgraded to multipoint fuel injection and benefited from a modest gain in power, up to 100 horsepower. Eliminated this year was the stretched-cab model, the Spacecab, as well as the automatic transmission option.
The other major news was that the pickup was no longer assembled at Isuzu's Indiana facility. It now came directly from Japan.
1996[edit | edit source]
The Hombre replaced the old compact pickup truck on January 9, 1996.
