After the demise of the Jaguar XJS in 1996, the car was replaced by its successor, the XK8.
The first XK-Series cars went on sale on October 3, 1996 as 1997 models, with an all-new 4.0-liter V8 engine with 290 horsepower. They were sold as either 2-door coupes or convertibles.
Headlamps and a security system were some new additions for 1998. The car made no further significant changes in 1999.
