The MX-6 with its styling echoes of the BMW 8-series coupes, is sister under the skin to the Ford Probe. When Ford introduced the first-generation Probe, they were surprised to learn that they were wrong in their selection of intended market, Mustang buyers had no interest in highly styled, efficient, good-handling sporty coupes. Mustang buyers might be interested in Camaros or Firebirds but not in front-drive Fours and Sixes.

Toyota established the whole mini-Mustang market with the Celica about 40 years ago, followed, predictably, by Nissan and Honda. The MX-6 was Mazda's entry and it's a good one. The MX-6 competes with the Celica, Nissan 240SX, Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Sebring and Dodge Avenger.

Year-to-year changes

1994

Dual airbags were added in 1994 along with CFC-free air conditioning. The MX-6 was also a moderately equipped 2.0-liter Four and the MX-6 LS was a heavily equipped V6.

1995

The 1995 MX-6 LS has been dropped as a separate standard model and becomes an option package on the MX-6.

The package includes a 2.5-liter V6, 4-wheel disc brakes, 15-in. alloy wheels, air conditioning, alarm system, 6-speaker stereo cassette package, foglamps, and a whole range of minor cosmetic and functional items.

The MX-6 with V6 package is an able performer with a good torque spread, capable with either manual or automatic. The Four has barely adequate power with an automatic gearbox, the MX-3 is a better choice if the cost and economy of the Four are prime considerations.
