Perched near the upper end of the compact-sport/utility market, the Mitsubishi Montero appealed to buyers seeking both luxury and utility. Competitors included the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Oldsmobile Bravada, Isuzu Trooper, Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Discovery. Until 1999, the Montero was available in only one basic configuration, as a 4-door, 4-wheel-drive luxury sport/utility vehicle. A 7-passenger interior was optional.

Year-to-year changes[]

1994[]

The base engine, which was standard equipment in the LS, was the new, more powerful 3.0-liter V6. The SR utilized the 215-hp dohc 3.5-liter V6. The base transmission was a 5-speed manual; a 4-speed automatic was optional. The uplevel SR came with the 4-speed automatic only. Mitsubishi's Activ Trac 4WD system allowed shift-on-the-fly operation between 2wd and 4wd at speeds up to 62 mph, or use of an all-wheel drive mode at all times.

For 1994, the Montero lineup had two model offerings -- the base LS and the upscale SR. The SR model continued as the premium Montero offering.

1995[]

The entry-level LS model received an all-new 177-horsepower 3.0-liter sohc 24-valve V6 engine for added performance. This engine provided 26 more horsepower than the 1994 model's V6. It also benefited from a new optional electronic 4-speed automatic transmission and standard 15-in. alloy wheels.

The 1995 model reintroduced electronic 3-way variable shock absorbers. Also new was a standard power sunroof. Both models this year featured improved towing capacity (up by half a ton to 5000 pounds) and minor interior changes.

1996[]

CD players were now standard on the SR.

A compact-sized companion, the Montero Sport, went on sale as a late model in January 1997.
