Saturn lightly referred to its wagons as "sedans with a backpack." Chief competition came from the Ford Escort/Mercury Tracer wagons and Subaru's Impreza wagon.

1993[]
Saturn's wagons were offered in two trim levels: base SW1 and upscale SW2. The SW1 had a single-cam version of the 1.9-liter Four with 85 horsepower.
The SW2 got the added power of the twin-cam, 4-valve-per-cylinder, 1.9-liter Four, good for 124 horsepower. Both engines were available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
Standard equipment differences between the models included front and rear stabilizer bars and larger, 15-in. wheels for the SW2. Antilock brakes were an option for both models, as was traction control with ABS and automatic transmission. Both models had nearly identical option lists, with variable-effort power steering and a leather interior for the SW2 the notable exceptions.
1995[]
The SW1's 1.9-liter Four engine was upgraded this year from 85 to 100 horsepower. The increased power came from a new multiport fuel-injection system that replaced the 1994 model's throttle body injection.
While the wagon's exterior treatment was essentially a carryover, the real news was in the passenger compartment. Dual airbags replaced the former motorized belts. A totally new instrument cluster with a more contemporary, rounded appearance featured a larger, easier-to-read tach and speedometer. The entire panel was easier to see, thanks to a new 2-spoke steering wheel.
