The Subaru Legacy was introduced at the beginning of the 1990s model year decade.

Year-to-year changes[]

1995[]

For '95, the Legacy sedan and wagon had all new sheetmetal, a longer wheelbase, available traction control with front-drive, dual airbags, and new variations on the basic station wagon, all intended to make it more competitive with the Honda Accord, Mazda 626 and Nissan Altima. Both bodies were offered in base, L, LS and LSi versions. The new Legacy went on sale in July 1994, while the Outback began sales in September.

Subaru offered traction control for the first time. An alternative to all-wheel drive (AWD), traction control worked like ABS in reverse, using sensors to detect speed differences between drive wheels and using a combination of lightly applied brakes and reduced power to stop wheelspin.

A bit more standard power and torque was available, but the 1994 model's turbo was gone. The chassis was tuned for both better ride and handling through the reduction of unsprung weight. Subaru was alone in equipping its cars with a "hill holder" that allowed 2-pedal operation with manual transmission on hills.

Subaru did well in the station wagon segment and has now added the value-priced "Brighton" option with high-line upholstery, air conditioning, a 40-watt cassette audio system and, most important, AWD.

Another wagon option was the "Outback," which Subaru offered as an alternative to truck-based sport/utility vehicles such as the Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner, Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport. The package included 2-tone paint, alloy wheels, foglights, roof rack, cruise control, ABS, a unique interior and a 12-volt power socket in the cargo area that allows the convenient use of some camping/outdoor accessories.
