Positioned in the middle to upper end of the compact pickup truck market, Toyota's pickups were designed to appeal to younger buyers who prized sporty performance, but who also demanded dependable service. Major competitors included the Nissan Truck, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S-Series and GMC Sonoma. "Don't fix what ain't broke" was Toyota's motto in the mid-1990s.

Year-to-year changes[edit | edit source]

1994[edit | edit source]

Available in standard and extended cab models, the Toyota pickup offered three trim levels: Standard, Deluxe (DX) and the top-of-the-line SR5 V6.

The base model and the DX came with a 2.4-liter sohc 4-cylinder standard. The SR5 V6 had a 3.0-liter sohc V6 as standard equipment. The V6 was also available as an option on the DX models.

The standard transmission was a 5-speed manual; a 4-speed automatic was optional. The 4wd versions featured a 2-speed transfer case with a floor-mounted shift lever and automatic locking hubs for shift-on-the-fly operation at speeds up to 50 mph. Both 2wd and 4wd models had independent torsion bar front suspensions.

Options included air conditioning, a pop-up glass sunroof, cruise control, AM/FM/cassette/CD sound system and power windows, outside mirrors and door locks.

1995[edit | edit source]

The Toyota pickup line stood pat for 1995. Only three changes were anticipated, the introduction of center high-mounted brake lights, a new audio lineup, and the deletion of California-emissions V6 engines in the 4x2 line. The V6 engine were therefore available only on 4x4 trucks in states with California emissions regulations.
