20 years ago, the all-new made-in-the-U.S. Toyota Tacoma pickup made a mid-1995 introduction, as a replacement for the old pickup truck. The compact pickup boasted three new engines, an all-new chassis, enhanced safety features and bold new styling. Positioned in the middle to upper end of the compact pickup truck market, the Tacoma was designed to appeal to younger buyers who prize sporty performance. Past major competitors included Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S-Series and GMC Sonoma.

Year-to-year changes

1995

The Tacoma's original base engine was a 2.4-liter dohc 4-cylinder. Optional engines were a 2.7-liter dohc Four and a 3.4-liter 24-valve V6. A 5-speed manual transmission was standard. A 4-speed electronic overdrive automatic was optional.

The Tacoma was available in regular and extended cab models, in 2-wheel and 4-wheel-drive configurations. Regular cab models featured two optional trim levels: LX and SX. Extended cab models had two basic packages: Xtracab V6 and Xtracab SR5 V6. Four-wheel-drive versions featured a 2-speed transfer case with a floor-mounted shift lever and automatic locking hubs for shift-on-the-fly operation. Xtracab SR5 V6 models had a new option: One-Touch Hi-4 electric shift that would engage the front axle by pressing a button on the transfer case lever.

Options for the Toyota Tacoma include air conditioning, antilock brakes, cruise control, power outside mirrors, windows and door locks.

1996

For 1996, the Tacoma was carried over with minor specification and option-package changes.
